Gleason trail was easy to follow, with minimal blowdowns and not much mud. During the descent, at ca. 3200 ft. I left the trail to explore some of the ledges on the SE shoulder of Sandwich Dome. I crossed numerous old sled roads in the first 30 minutes, remnants of the Beebe River logging operation.
While I didn't find the specific ledge I was looking for, I stumbled upon a large rocky outcrop which afforded some good views to Mt Israel and Guinea Pond. From here I headed due South down the SE spur, steep going but mostly open woods.
Before reaching the railroad bed I discovered an old cellar hole and a GIANT stone wall. These can be reached from diverging logging roads that extend north from Guinea Pond Trail, about 0.3 miles northeast of the intersection of Guinea Pond trail and the Cold River. |
