At least during the summer, the South Pond gate doesn't open until 10 am, to accommodate the private contractor that charges $7 per vehicle for swimming and picnicing at the beach. That was too late for us, so we saved $7 but had a 1.1-mile roadwalk for our finale. Despite the sunny skies and holiday weekend, the beach and pay lot were nearly empty. |

The north end of the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, from Unknown Pond to South Pond, seems to get little use and sections were overgrown with ferns and such, but never hard to follow. A few blowdowns to boot.
Devil's Hopyard Trail is unmaintainable - a short, scenic but tedious jumble of slippery, tilted, mossy boulders. |
