| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
East Inlet Road has had recent culvert work done the first 9 miles and at 10.3 miles there is an exposed culvert and just past that a washout. These problems spots can be avoided and a sedan driven carefully and slowly past these two bad spots should do okay. Lots of parking before the gate and at the kiosk at Boundary Pond |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
The boundary swath at the north end of the pond is soggy and we were able to hop and dance lightly on brushy dry spots. This must be a big pain to cross when it isn't super dry. |

Well before getting to the pond just before the access road begins to descend more steeply we entered the woods straight ahead hoping to follow the old smuggler's road. I think we found it but I led us up too high on old logging road that disappeared. We kept pushing ahead and tried to find it again by slabbing down lower and we did find it again, it had blowdowns and soggy places but was okay, it led to the swath. We headed up the swath to D'Urban and it was steep, sunny & hot and the grass/prickers are dying off now. Nice views and found recognized highpoint in woods on USA side of the swath. There are marked hiking trails SF and even a sign with a hiker that lead off the swath and around the worst places and appear to return to swath--we didn't follow them but wonder if it would have been ok to follow them into Canada to avoid the steepest slippery sections of the swath?? We descended back down the swath and headed to Snag Pond. Crossing the swampy area at the end of Boundary Pond was sketchy and it must be quite the wade in non-drought season. Here was the only boundary monument that is a small obelisk that we passed the whole day the rest were just discs. The boundary to Snag Pond Peak is crazy and it zigs and zags and it made me wonder if we were really headed where we wanted to go at times. The footing here was much better and the grades more gradual. We passed by many abandoned treestand/blinds that are deteriorated beyond any possible save use but there are lots of salt lick blocks on the Canadian side so the hunters still must come there often. We took a good long break on top of Sang Pond Peak and we borrowed the chairs inside the storage unit shack (magazines inside had dates of '08 &'10) and we sat in the middle of the swath enjoying the sunshine, munching Kit Kat bars and taking in the good view of Magalloway and far into Canada too. We descended the swath back to the spot where the swath is nearest the pond's spillway and bushwhacked directly to the spillway--surprisingly good easy quick whack given the dry conditions. This hike/whack went very well and it was fun to spend so much time traversing the swath. |
