Trails: Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, October 9, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I got going late, and ended up having to park off the side of Sawyer River Road just before the bridge (where there was room for several cars without blocking the main road).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The main crossing is trivial at current water levels. The crossings on the old section of trail near the beaver pond are also trivial, in fact the 3rd crossing on that section (above the beaver dam crossing) is bone-dry right now.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The usual mud pits approaching the height-of-land below the junction are still pretty muddy despite the dry weather. Some more rock stepping stones would alleviate trail-edge erosion.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several, they seemed to be fine though a couple didn't seem to appreciate the wind and sleet on Signal Ridge.

Comments
Comments: I got up late, and thus got to the trailhead near 9:30, which was full as expected. The skies never did clear as forecast the day before (though that forecast had changed by morning), in fact the cloud deck steadily lowered, and after a few spits of rain here and there, it began to lightly sleet as I approached Signal Ridge. Several folks turned around at the ridge, saying the sideways sleet (it was blowing in the mid 20s mph, and pretty chilly too) was too much for them, but with warm clothes and a rain shell and knowing it is only exposed for a few hundred feet before re-entering the trees, I had no issues crossing, as did many others. Most folks had left the top by the time I got there, so it was pretty quiet, aside from the wind at least! Sadly no views from the top, though there were brief peeks into the valley on the way back across Signal Ridge, by which time the sleet was done as well. There was some nice color down there, though the wind had done a number on the leaves already, and I suspect even moreso after Monday's much higher winds.
