Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small lot that will fit possibly 10 cars. Nicely maintained. No portapotty there. And beware of the giant dip in the road on the way to the lot that will easily bottom out your car if you don't inch over it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are several trees blown down along the trail, to go over, under or around. There are also some small fir trees fallen on the trail and being packed into the snow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several happy dogs on the trail. There is no rock scrambling or iffy ledges in this trail, so it seems to be great for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There is a single black croc slip on, looks to be a man's, at the trailhead sign waiting for its owner.

Comments
Comments: There was no snow at the bottom of the trail, and then gradually more as ascending, and about 6 inches at top. Due to the heavy rain on Saturday, the snow was wet and sticky, and moves around under your feet. The trail was easy to follow because hikers before me had wore a clear path in the snow. There are several places along the trail where I saw no yellow blazes for significant stretches, and it would be great if that was given some attention as the trail could be hard to follow in spots in fresh snow. I carried microspikes but never took them out of my bag. I saw other hikers wearing them even though there was no ice, for purposes of more stability in the snow. Two gray jays were on the summit of Mount Starr King when I arrived at 11am, and landed on my outstretched arm.

At the summit of Waumbek is a knee-high cairn in a small clearing. The clouds were low so it was foggy. But given the height of the trees, I don't think there would be any view even on a perfectly clear day. I've seen some photos online of partial views of the Presidential range from Waumbek, but I wonder if those were taken several years ago when the trees may have been smaller.
