Comments: Second time was a charm, found recognized summit and then some. I started at the Bear Notch Gate just up from Route 302 in Bartlett, there is a good parking area there. Bear Notch Road's asphalt was bare but the experimental roads are all signed for snowmobile trails and these gravel roads had a good thin snow cover (someone had gone xc skiing, wish it was me). Walked a short distance up Bear Notch Road and turned right on Albany Brook Trail, met NEON--National Ecological Observatory Network workers--they were checking their super weather station tower that measures just about everything that can be measured in our atmosphere! Stayed on road, continued past the Water Tank turned Albany Brook turns left, straight ahead is no snowmos. Finally I reached the Upper Haystack Trail and followed that up--this road swings a big switchback for a reason, so I stayed on it to almost height of the land and then I entered the woods. I aimed for just east of the bump and found the woods to be open and quite pleasant. I stayed high and did not reach the col between Haystack and the North Peak but wound my way up. It got steep but not bad and no cliffs! I found myself up top before knew it and I knew it because the summit is a blowdown/spruce mess! But I walked right into the recognized highpoint--I didn't even spend a minute worrying I wouldn't find it this time. I pushed my way around the summit some and tried to find some good viewpoints and I got a good lookup Crawford Notch and at the big haystack. I mostly followed my tracks down, not worrying much because I knew I'd hit the snowmo road somewhere. Nice morning didn't start to cloud up until I got back to my car.
