Comments
Comments: Of course Andrew and I have to decide to do this hike while the road is closed. It was a long cold walk on Bear Notch Road both ways, which was tracked out by a snowmobile or two, some skis, and some feet. The gate is currently closed. Picked up the old Bear Mountain Ski Trail about 3.3 miles in from the gate, we were able to follow it up to about 2150', then made for the peak through mostly open hardwoods up to about 2600', with scrappy conifers up to the ridge. Popped out on the corridor of the old Bear Mountain Trail, a short distance north of the canister, last entry from 11/16. We were able to follow the old Bear Mountain Trail for a considerable distance along the ridge, but lost it around 2850', and headed for the height of land in the notch by the path of least resistance. Steep and somewhat scrappy woods for the most part, but found more decent going toward the road. Very cool to be able to follow these long abandoned trails, if only for a little while.
