To avoid the water crossing at the beginning we parked at the lot off of rt 16 and walked up the road past the houses until we reached the unplowed cul-de-sac at the end. We followed kept walking straight onto the obvious logging road until it eventually connected with the trail. Other crossings were frozen over and easily crossed. |

Microspikes all the way. Carried snowshoes just in case, but they were not needed. Ledges were fine - gorgeous views. Presi's were in the clouds - sorry for anyone working on their winter 48's over there today!
The steep scramble at the junction of Kenduskeag and Carter Moriah trail was icy but doable with micro's. We avoided the hard ice that flowed down the center of the trail - Two of us went up to the right and another went up to the left to avoid one section of about 10-15 ft and hopped back to the center once above it.
There were a couple places along Carter-Moriah where accidentally stepping off the trail would result in a post hole past your knee...That happened a couple times. Most of the time the snow was made for micro's, crusty, solid snow underneath - helped along by the warmer temps and rain earlier in the week. |
