rocky branch trail is well packed out with a pretty smooth snowshoe track. some thin coverage around the numerous rocky seeps. snowshoes definitely the way to go. i followed the trail a short distance past the wilderness boundary and took a line on south engine hill. off trail there was a couple feet of unconsolidated snow. some deeper pockets and stretches off breakable crust in some of the sunny glades. i stayed off the top of the ridge to the east until just before the summit which kept me in open woods all the way up to the recognized highpoint. some very fresh moose sign along the way. i went a short distance west from the highpoint to some nice open ledges with a unique view to isolation. the presidentials above were still in the clouds. i took full advantage of my tracks on the way back out to the trail. down low on the way out the snow on the trail was getting fairly sticky.
