lots of parking at loon mountain base area. the one employee i talked to gave me the impression they did not want hikers on the ski trails though i had no problem walking the short section of brookway that i did. |

from the octagon lodge i walked the brookway ski trail to the sign for the national forest boundary where i turned left off the ski trail across a small foot bridge. i almost immediately turned right into the woods after the bridge and started the bushwhack. i would estimate snow depths of 2-3 feet on the ascent with deeper drifted areas. open hardwoods low which transitioned into confierous forest higher up. i slabbed along the south side of the western spur ridge of the peak which seemed to avoid some of the steeper woods. a few tricky spots and some blowdown along with a fair amount of scrappy woods before reaching the false bump north of the peak. the final ascent up to recognized highpoint was through scrappy and snow laden trees with some of the heaviest snow on the route. i descended in my tracks. pretty tough hike given the snow conditions, but ultimately not a bad route. in theory it might be easier to hike farther up the ski trails to pick up glades to the saddle or come over from north loon via the bootleg ski trails, but i did not know the condition of those routes and was dubious about trying to go up the ski trails on such a busy day. |
