| Comments: |
First to arrive at 6:50AM, and started hiking at 7AM. Temperature in the teens at the start, warming a bit as the day went on. Very little wind at the summit, 10-15 mph.
Climbing from the Kancamagus side is very steep. Microspikes are necessary. Full crampons would be better on the steep portions. Made good use of the mountaineering axe on the climb, both the pick and the spike. Snowshoes would be alright in certain portions, but not necessary. Postholed a few times on the sides of the trail.
Chimney between Osceola and East Osceola was dicey with microspikes. Would have been much safer with crampons.
Decent was mostly a controlled fall down all the steep portions. I surfed half of it on my feet, and the other half was a butt slide using the axe to slow the decent. Needed to self-arrest once or twice. |
