Facts: The distance one way is 3.25 miles roughly half of which is on trails. It took the four of us less than an hour to get to the Fletcher Cascades and about another four hours to summit Flat Mtn. Flat Mtn is 3,331 feet high. It was 0 degrees when we started walking. Opinion : either we are pitiful or the conditions off the trail are tough. Probably some of both. We chose to go up the Osceola like steeps to the right of the cascades then a slight course change to the left once up on flatter ground. The steeps were slow going because, well, they are steep and one cannot push the snow around. You have to posthole it down every step. Once we postholed up to gentler terrain we found many spruce (matchsticks) thickets to add to the fun. We all had a fine day indeed, thank you Lady Di, the Schorman, and Steve Moore. Incidentally - back to the car by 4:30. 8 hours for 6.48 miles? Pitiful! |
