Hiked the loop using mountaineering snowshoes (MSR Evo Ascents). As one would expect, all the trails were soft from the mild temps and rain. Used snowshoes to keep things smooth. Lots and lots of ice, which was soft, but with the big dip in temps coming will become bullet proof. Personally, once that cold weather hits, I wouldn't do that hike with anything less than Hillsounds or aggressive mountaineering snowshoes...I don't believe microspikes will cut it (no pun intended). Lots of large chunks of fallen ice from trees on Ridge trail between Belknap and Gunstock, that once the freeze hits will become good ankle twisters. |
