Microspikes seemed like the best traction to use but I also carried crampons. The trail was moderately icy for the first half with a few patches of water ice. But then it transitioned to major sections of water ice. I had no problem with my sharpened Hillsounds but a group I passed decided to turn around before tree line as the water ice got more aggressive. At tree line I had to remove my microspikes as the ledges were completely ice free all the way to the summit. I put on my wind parka, more head insulation and a face mask balaclava. A bit nippy at the summit with a steady breeze. The fire tower is closed. Given current conditions I recommend aggressive (1/2") sharp microspikes or crampons since there is significant sections of water ice. |
