Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: from rt. 16 in dummer we drove dummer ponds road for a bit over 6 miles to the power station for the nearby millsfield wind farm. they are keeping the road plowed for operations at the power station and the driving was straight forward in an awd and would likely be fine in just about any car with decent tires. there is ample room to park on the edge of the road where the plowing ends. from there they use snow cats to access the towers.

Comments
Comments: we walked the snow cat packed dummer ponds road down to its junction with phillips brook road where we turned right and continued on the packed track to trio ponds road where we turned left. the first section of this road isn't offical snowmobile corridor though it had been previously travelled. once across a bridge over phillips brook we hit the snomo corridor proper which is well travelled and packed down. we followed this to around 1800 ft at a hard left turn where a logging road, unmarked, left straight ahead. this road had seen previous snowmobile traffic so the going was good up to around 2700 ft where it started to peter out. we bushwhacked from there aiming for the saddle north of south whitcomb. snow off trail was semi supportive as we zig zagged through regrowth spruce. total snow depths varied but i would say 3+ feet on average with numerous deeper drifted areas. closer to the ridge the woods opened up nicely. we ended up a bit above the col on south whitcomb and had a good open woods bushwhack up to the recognized highpoint. we then dropped to the col and slabbed the west side of the sub peak headed to middle whitcomb. once past the sub peak we got back up onto the ridge crest and after briefly walking a bit off course found mostly open woods up to middle whitcomb. on the descent we took full advantage of our tracks which had filled in quickly along the road portions of the hike owing to lots of blowing snow. round trip was around 13 miles and is most likely the most efficient way to reach these peaks in winter.
