There is a real mix bag. Lower elevation you are fine with light traction. About midway up to 3/4 there was substantial rain last week and icing. There is a firm crust littered with all ice droppings from the trees so it is like ice cubes on ice and very difficult going, especially on side slopes, with Hillsounds but we managed being very careful. I wouldn't come down through the woods without crampons though. From Paradise Valley, just beyond Dot Cross Jct it is solid ice to the summit. We switched to crampons in Paradise Valley and were able to make it through the woods along the side of the White Dot trail. Ice is a good 1'' thick on ledges and thicker on any snow heading to summit cone and not an advisable route till a thaw. Saw one person take a good unintended 50 ft slide trying to make the beginning of the ledges in microspikes. Luckily a friend below stopped his slide. Summit cone is all ice and certainly crampon worthy. An ice axe for the last 1/4 mile is certainly justified for Sunday hikers. |
