Three of us chose to do Waumbeck today because we feared we would be skunked by the deep snows on other choices. This was a good choice but not for the reason we imagined : while we were booting up in the parking lot three more persons arrived who had other plans only to discover the parking lots were not plowed : Appalachia, Hancock loop. The previous trench was still discernable thanks to a skier. About 6 to 8 of nice powder down low increasing to a foot or more up high. In places some serious drifta. The skier seemed to go only as far as Starr King; thus finding the trail over to Waumbeck was tricky. When you fall into a waist deep spruce trap you know you are off the trail. To paraphrase another recent posting : Roughly a 1000 pounds snowshoed Waumbeck today so there is now a nice footbed. Keep it that way - wear snowshoes. My thanks to Craig who did more than his share of the work, plus Ron, Garret, Larry, and Bob for another fine day. Even views! |
