magalloway road had been groomed yesterday and had a couple inches of new snow along with notable drifting especially after mile 4 or so. snowmobiles packed it out pretty well over the course of today. had a nice moose encounter along the road as well as seeing a couple of pine martens one of which was chasing a snowshoe hair until it decided to run straight at me presumably to try and shake the marten (it was successful). i walked the road to mile 6 where i turned left onto an old logging road. here is where it got interesting. this area got a lot of snow in the last week and that was quickly apparent. even with my bigger float snowshoes i was going in at least a couple feet along the road. at the end of the road i headed up in a cut on an evident herd path where the snow got deeper and after a couple waist deep wallows i hit the woods where the snow was more managable. i found the woods to be generally open, but a lot more spruce than i recall from another trip a few years ago. this was all heavily weighted down which made it harder to find good lines and hid a lot of potential spruce traps (thankfully i only got into one of note). i wound my way back and forth trying to keep on open lines with increasing snow at elevation. the last 300 vertical took a long time with large drifts and heavily loaded trees. once on the ridge i walked a short distance south to the recognized highpoint. worth noting that the canister is less than a foot above the snow pack so may disappear with another good storm or two. i happily descended in my tracks and followed the road back out. it was cold and windy all day, but after 1pm it stopped snowing and quickly cleared off making for a beautiful hike out. |
