This was my first mountain winter hike in deep snow. The trail was well broken out by snowshoes from the parking lot to about a quarter mile from the sharp left (south) turn that takes you directly up North Moat. Beginning about a half mile before the turn it looked like that section of trail had been broken out by a solo snowshoer. This hiker turned around a little less than a quarter mile before the turn. The trail was unbroken from that point forward. I made it to the turn, sinking in about 8 to 12 inches with each step. Overall snow depth was at least 2 feet, possibly more, I could not dig any deeper with my hands. Because I was hiking alone this portion of the trail definitely got me warmed up. At the turn I was able to break trail for about 150 to 200 yards up the steep initial section of trail. At that point I called it a day. After turning around I met one hiker heading up to North Moat and he said he would try and break trail beyond where I had gotten to. Lots of people on the trail once you got closer to Diana's Baths, I think most were headed to the cascades (totally snow covered). This was a good hike and a learning experience about deep snow. My suggestion is snowshoes and gaiters, they both served me well today and made what would have been impossible trekking, doable. |
