Peaks
Peaks Mt. Webster (attempt), NH
Trails
Trails: Webster Cliff Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, February 20, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at Route 302 almost directly across from the trail. Lot was plowed, had room for maybe 12 cars, two thirds of lot was solid ice. I was only one there at 8:00, three other cars when I returned at 1:00.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: two of the four water crossings have strong boards across, other crossings very minor, step overs.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blow down and one duck under, both now removed. Trail had been broken by one or more snow shoe hikers and there were tracks from one bare booter. The trail was in good shape, not a smooth snowshoe track because there didn't seem to have been that many people who had gone up the trail since the last two storms. The bareboot postholes were not a problem, but some were surprisings deep (18 inches).
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: no dogs on the trail today but the trail looked fine for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nothing

Comments
Comments: The snow had a solid crust that would have been okay for bare booters with spikes (met two hikers, wearing spikes but carrying snowshoes and they weren't having any problems sinking in). I kept snow shoes on car to car and felt comfortable. I hadn't been on this trail before and was surprised at how steep a number of sections were during the first mile and a half. Going along the ridge, above the ledges, I was having to duck to keep from hitting the tree branches. The snow depth along the ridge trail must be 3 feet above the ground. I turned around 3/8ths of a mile from summit, trail was fine, I just ran out of steam and time. A sincere thank you to whoever broke trail after the storms, it must have required a Herculean effort.
