Wore snowshoes up the Ammonoosuc, televators useful. Popular day out, mild; mountains were in the clouds at 9 am. Around, 11 undercast across the valley to the west and cloudy, then cleared up to blue sky. Windy in a few spots but not strong for White Mtn standards, often near still above treelike. Some crunchy ice on a section of the Gulfside, crampons came in handy, though my snowshoes were handling it ok but felt much more comfortable after I switched. Ammonoosuc trail is packed down, the upper half of the Jewell has patches of loose snow and lots of postholes where snowshoes were convenient.
Monroe had hardened snow and a bit crusty ice. |
