Comments
Comments: we crossed the lake on a line towards perry ponds peak hitting moderate spruce woods on the other side soon crossing a snowmobile trail. with the warm up last week and recent cool down the snow has totally firmed up and we could walk anywhere in snowshoes without going through. lower woods on the east slope of perry ponds peak were nice and generally open. more tight spruce higher up with a couple false bumps before reaching the recognized highpoint. we then followed the north ridge of the peak for a bit before dropping into the drainage to the west on a rough line towards west prospect. after a sprucy, steep drop the woods were wide open for the traverse of the drainage. a bit of steep climbing up to the boundary swath put us on the bump to the southeast of west prospect. from there we carefully down climbed a steep section of swath then made the nice moderate ascent up to west prospect. the recognized highpoint is a short distance into the woods on the u.s. side. the swath had seen earlier snowmobile use and the snow was very firm. we walked a bit north on the swath to get a fine views into canada then doubled back on our tracks. back in the drainage between the peaks we opted to cross back up through the saddle north of perry ponds peak. good open going to the saddle then some scrappy spruce up high on the other side. the woods gradually got better lower down and we angled south ultimately hitting the snowmobile trail very close to where we crossed it in the morning. we then picked up our tracks back across the lake to the boat launch.
