We had it all: Rain, slush, snow, ice. I was surprised to see 1-2 inches of new snow at lower elevations,2-3 inches as you go higher. Ridge had breakable ice crusts. Didn't wear any traction until I reached the summit. Once I was there, changed all my clothing and put on hillsounds till i reached back to car. New snow was powdery, hard packed trails underneath. No post-holing with or without traction. Saw a dozen teenagers camping. Theircross-country skiing was obvious all over the trails before the crossing. When I caught up with them they were trying to figure out how to get to the other side of small river. I don't think they were successful because I didn't see any tracks on my back. Anyhow, I think packed trails are holding up pretty good. 2 miles road walk continues; it isn't packed at all 😔.
PS: Don't deviate from the main trail. Teenagers' tracks are all over the place before the crossing. You don't want a mile long off trail experience like I did. |
