I planned a later start because there was overnight and early morning rain. The forecast was for falling temps during the day, which didn't happen, and clearing, which did. Temp at trailhead 36 at 10 AM. Began with micros; but was sinking in a little; at two miles, switched to snowshoes and kept them on for the duration of the hike. There were faded snowshoe marks and some minor postholing from warmer weather on the trail; but I had to consciously follow the blazes. Coming in from the east, there was no wind until the trail junction in the saddle. Reached the summit in 2 1/2 hours. Spent a half hour on the summit enjoying the views; but it was breezy. The snow was very different on the way down, it had softened considerable and I was glad I had my snowshoes. With the falling temps, the trail may be ok with just micros; but carrying snowshoes might be a good idea. It's a wonderful trail and summit. |
