Comments
Comments: we never made the summit...turned around about a mile below because we were just plain tired from slogging thru the mashed potatoes and the extra bushwhacking that we did when we were off trail. snowshoes were a must, but no one had been on the *trail* in quite some time, so we were breaking trail too. a few words on the logging in this area...the guide book description doesn't really apply any more, because recent operations have made the description obsolete. yes, the trail is blazed in yellow, but blazes are few and far in between and there is a circus of colors used by the foresters on all the trees. ALL THE TREES! ...so many colors and flagging and BAH! if you're a redliner and you need this trail...good map/compass/gps skills are a must. if you just want to hike Kearsarge, take the KMNT. If you're bent on hiking to the summit from this trail, i would gently suggest going straight up FR317 to the first clear cut area (there is an old metal culvert stacked on a tire here). when you enter this area, there is a metal post on the right with a hiker symbol...ignore that, and continue straight up the clear cut staying toward the left side. at the top of the clear cut, there is an opening and maybe some pink flagging to a woods road/skidder track that's about .2mi long leading to the next clear cut area. staying left hike up to the top (i think i'm remembering this correctly), where there is another small opening, marked with pink flagging and a faint blaze (set into the tree line) that marks the trail. from this point the corridor is not always obvious, but if you look hard for blazes, you should be good to go. the higher you climb, the more discernible the corridor. Lots of BIG moose and bear tracks in these woods. Good luck!
