Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Cul-de-sac wasn't plowed, room for 3-4 cars in front of the snow bank by the street
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We parked near the cul-de-sac so unsure how the biggest crossing was - the lower of the two larger crossings we had to contend with was open, doable today with a big leap but the snow bank on one side had melted significantly on our way down and the water level had risen, snow bank likely won't be there much longer which would make the crossing difficult. The second larger crossing was still solidly bridged. Several smaller streamlettes were annoying but all easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Typical scattered blowdowns for this time of year, had to push through branches on C-M trail where there was probably 5+ feet of snowpack.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hannah had a great day - she postholed off trail but didn't seem to mind too much. Plenty of snow and open running water to cool down today
Bugs
Bugs: Some starting to buzz around

Comments
Comments: Big time spring conditions, it was a t-shirt and snowshoes kind of day, snowshoes car to car - there were some areas down low with running water in the middle of the trail where we had to step on rocks or on the snow banks up high. Deeper snow up to the ridge, easy to follow previous tracks though. Many of the ledge areas had open rock, didn't bother to take the snowshoes off for such short stretches though because the snow was 5-6'+ in places in the woods. The last steep pitch below the summit was an easy walk up ramp today - some recent activity coming up C-M trail from Gorham but nothing north on the AT or south from Stony Brook junction towards Imp shelter. Snow was mushy all day especially in the sunny areas, but most of the trail was fairly consolidated as long as you didn't step off the monorail (and if you did you could easily sink a few feet). We sunk a bit more on the descent and punched through in a few places but as long as we stayed in the middle of the trail it was manageable. Conditions are tough right now and won't get better if temps don't drop much this week - snowshoes are highly recommended - there is no *good* form of traction for the current conditions but anything less would lead to significant postholing, wet boots and a very difficult hike. Very warm day but great views and we had the mountain to ourselves - thanks Tim, Ali and Hannah for a great day. 575/576 :)
