Wanted to see how close to the A.T. junction I could get without light traction or snowshoes before the snow stopped my progress. Trail starts off dry until crossing the old logging road (about 1.5 miles from NH16), from here it became a muddy mess with running water in spots. Just before the ledges were a couple of short patches of snow that were easy to deal with. The ledges are bare with great views to be had. Soon after the ledges, where the trail heads back into the woods, is when the snow covered the trail, I took a few steps and sunk in to my calves and turned around! Made it within a few tenths of a mile of the summit and less than half a mile to the junction of the A.T. Most likely this will be clear, or clear enough of snow, to make it to the A.T. junction in a week, although it will be very muddy and wet for the foreseeable future. |
