Comments
Comments: Bear Notch road being still closed we thought we would try this alternate route to Bartlett Haystack. The plan was to walk the Tremont trail to the old logging road that crosses it, follow that road to its end then ascend the low ridge to the summit. The road part was the sole error we made all day. The road is full of brush, mud, water and snow. We ended up walking beside the road in easy third growth hardwood forest. After the end of the road we found first more hardwoods and then long stretches of large hemlocks with wide open space beneath. Once high enough things were scrappier but, except for a stretch on the ridge, not dense. The difficult part was not the woods but the snow. First 1/4 mile : bare ground. Then spring snow and monorail up to the road. Then alternating bare ground and spring snow all the way to the summit. I do not exaggerate when I say we put on/took off snowshoes at least a dozen times. Bill S (the Schorman) walked out of one if his snowshoes so we had to backtrack a ways to find that. Snow did not help here. Then Steve realized almost at the summit that his camera was gone. After a lovely lunch on the summit in the warm sun and fine views the snow enabled us to backtrack and find the camera. On bare ground it would have been hopeless. Thanks Lady Di, the Schorman, and Steve for another fine 'whack!
