Comments
Comments: Hiked up Sandwich Mountain Trail from Rte 49 Trailhead. Noticed that the water levels were a little high due to spring melt, but I managed to cross without much more than a wet boot. My partner took a slip and ended up taking a dip seated waist deep. We continued on up trail which was mostly dry with patches of damp and small puddles that were easily avoided without going off trail. Some places we noted wet rocks and small stretches of firm, disappearing monorails in a couple of places. Until reaching Jennings Peak. The stretch from the Jennings Spur trail to Sandwich had some areas of significant snow left on trail. the Monorail for the most part was narrow, but stable. Any foot placement off the rail would posthole to the knee and deeper. The last .2 of the ascent to Sandwich was clear and dry. On the reverse we chose Drakes Brook Trail which was mostly dry and in places damp. There were a couple of significant mud holes that could be negotiated easily enough but there was not any places of snow I recall. The trail can be travelled without additional traction required, for those not so sure of their footing, micro spikes may be prudent in a couple of small areas. There were a couple of blow downs along the way, but could be climbed over, or walked around without a problem. With the forecast this week, I'd anticipate that much of snow will be gone in the next week or so. A great day hike with the added joy of beating black fly season.
