All water crossings were easy and rock-hoppable. Decided to cool feet off and walk across main crossing on way out at 1.8 miles. dropped boot in river. switched to crocs and socks and hiked the sloppy last 1.8 out. at car realized dropped wet boot on trail. Re-hiked first .3 miles. found! don't drop your boots, kids (twice)! |

First 2 miles up Signal Ridge is a bit muddy in spots. Can avoid with care. Carragain Notch and Desolation trail are in impeccable spring condition and everyone should be out suffering on these amazing, rugged trails. A bit soggy from start to finish. Desolation rocks were wet and slick. a very small spot or two of insignificant ice way up high-all easily avoidable. No spikes needed.
Saw no hikers on Carragain Notch and Desolation Trails. Notch is spectacular. Had summit tower to ourselves for 20 minutes with immaculate weather and views-truly the best view in the whites in my opinion! It was a conga-line of non-stop hikers headed up signal ridge as we made the 5 mile slog off the mountain. Was great to get an early start and take the scenic route! Highly recommend this loop! |
