The 5.1 mile hike up Smarts Brook trail to the junction with Sandwich Mtn trail is a lovely gentle walk through the woods. There are some muddy stretches which require some care but otherwise is easy footing. This is a very pretty trail edged with lady slippers, bunch berries, wild roses(?) and there is one peek-a-boo view to Sachem Peak along the way. The Sandwich Mtn trail ( 0.6 miles) is a fairly steep but fun climb to the summit, where there are amazing views from the summit cairn. Hiking midweek is a treat. We only met one person and her dog the whole day. |
