Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All water crossings were easy rock hops
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The North Carter Trail and parts of the Imp Trail could use some trimming. The passageway is becoming very narrow with tree growth and the branches touch you along the way.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a couple of very tired dogs with their owners. One dog laying down did not want to leave the summit of Middle Carter and his owner had to stand him up. He was so tired, poor doggie!
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies on the Carter Dome summit and in some places along the trails

Comments
Comments: Saturday turned out to be a great day to hike the Carters. Early morning fog cleared away by the time we got to the Carter Dome viewpoint and the predicted scattered showers never arrived. The area has clearly seen a lot of recent rain though because the trails are WET throughout this entire loop. Very muddy and the rocks and roots are extremely slick. Careful footing was required the entire way, and a couple of us took some falls on the descent regardless, though fortunately resulting in nothing more than a few scrapes. It was a good day to have carried some safety items because we made use of a couple of bandaids and also gave several zip ties to a passing hiker whose boot sole was almost entirely detached, to keep it on until he could reach the hut and get some additional help with boot doctoring. This loop took us out 9.5 hours of hiking time. Oh, and the ascent from Carter Notch to Carter Dome is every bit as long, steep and relentless as people say! I've never been so happy to finally see a summit cairn! Not even the Owls Head cairn!
