 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking at Basin Pond, and parking for a few vehicles roadside just south of Laughing Lion Trail. We originally planned on starting from Wild River Campground, but the gate was closed and locked. 113 was partially snow covered in the morning, especially toward the height of land, some ice remained in the afternoon. Won't be long before it's closed too. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Cold River crossing on Laughing Lion was an easy rock hop. The unbridged crossing of Basin Brook on Basin Trail was able to be hopped on wet rocks, some just below the water line. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Cleared one blowdown and a leaner on Laughing Lion, and de-limbed another on Basin Rim. Some old stepovers on Basin Rim, and Basin Trail, but nothing that impedes travel. Basin Brook appears to have jumped its banks just before the bridge down low, and left plenty of new erosion and gravel outwash in its wake. The bridge didn't appear to sustain any damage. |

 | Comments: |
Got in a very cold, windy, and snowy hike with Jake, up and over West Royce. A dusting of snow down low, up to 1+ inches above 3000' on West Royce, some ice lurking underneath, but not terrible yet. We managed to bare-boot/shoe, but carried spikes. Good day out in Evans Notch before all the roads close! |
