Parking/Access Road Notes: Clifford Brook Rd may have sustained some damage in the most recent big storm judging from the recent road work, but access is just fine now. The modest parking area is fine too.

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing of Clifford Brook on Waternomee Falls spur is a rock step. If you want to cross at the Falls it is easy but a wet boots, or paws cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a multi-stem beech tree blocking the trail just before the first crossing of Clifford Brook. There is another on the Carr Mtn trail around 2500'. They were too big for my pruning saw to handle without considerable effort, but a larger saw should get them easily. I was able to take a couple small trees across the path, and clean up a double spruce blowdown enough to allow easy passage on the trail. But it too needs to be removed at some point. Up high there is a duckunder and I cut back the eye gouger branch stubs so its okay now, but it too needs removal at some point. The first waterbar above the trail junction of the Waternomee Spur and main trail has totally failed leading to even faster erosion than normal. Like most old logging roads that were never closed according to modern standards, there are numerous places where water is running in the trail and erosion is turning them into stream beds, or in the flats there are mudpit or soft spots. This is particularly true for the old road above the spur intersection, but even the lower road has issues made worse by the recent serious storm. I found the trail easy to follow but we've been on it several times; the couple that were hiking after me got off on an old road for awhile before finding some old pieces of structure and realizing their error. All signs were in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper had a fun day, and even enjoyed a couple of wades in Clifford Brook. We saw two other dogs with the couple that was hiking after us and they were enjoying themselves.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: This was another storm recon and redline hike, and while there are no longer fully open vistas on the summit, a hike through the open hardwoods with the sun out on a mildish day in November is a treasure after a taste of winter up high. There were a couple of inches of snow on the summit area, none down low. I barebooted to the summit, but put on my rock spikes for the initial descent to speed it up.
