Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Cedar Brook crossing on East Side Trail was reasonably rock-hoppable (though not where the trail crosses) on mostly dry rocks. The crossing of Carrigain Branch on Wilderness Trail was accomplished on rocks just below the water, the same for the East Branch at Stillwater, where most of the rocks were an inch or two under water. Shoal Pond Brook crossings were manageable on ice/snow covered rocks. The North Fork above Thoreau Falls was crossed on icy rocks, spikes required.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Flicked as many downed branches off the trails as we could, and moved several larger ones along the route. East Side in generally good shape, excepting the eroded sections prior to Franconia Brook Tentsite. Wilderness had one blowdown near Camp 18 that we cleared, and some evidence of water having run in the trail for several stretches, leaf dams and bare treadway were sure signs. Shoal Pond has a few clusters of new blowdowns, mostly in the southern section, and we had our work cut out for us clearing a way through. Trail is passable, but you'll have to go over or under some stuff. Many step-overs as well on Shoal, as usual, and the bog bridging is terrible, also as usual. Thoreau Falls Trail is clear of show stopping blowdowns, but the Irene washout has been expanded significantly, the scramble down into it, and back up the other side was sketchy. We didn't explore bushwhack options to get around it. Bridge is still kicking, and no worse for the wear.

Comments
Comments: Did this overnight to Shoal Pond on Friday/Saturday. Icy on Pemi East Side going in, with snow depths increasing from less than an inch at Stillwater to 3 or so inches at Shoal Pond. Melting occurred during the day Saturday, and most of Pemi East Side was bare-bootable. Spikes preferred until we get more snow. Great time out in the Pemi with Rachel, Suzy, and Alvaro.
