Yowza! A posthole festival on still frozen solid crust led to several inch thick ice on the rock stairs to the ledge. We aborted 50 feet from the top given the ice as I was worried about my sons’ descent. The AMC staffer suggested snowshoes, upon seeing the hard crust we opted for spikes Which would be the only choice for that top section other than full crampons. Although I switched to snowshoes for descent to try and pack down the mess.
So gorgeous though - Mt. Washington crystal clear ahead and ice coated branches made everything glisten - and little to no wind made 15 degrees outright balmy. |
