| Comments: |
Good to get out again after a bout with the flu or a bad cold.
I used snowshoes from route 302 up to the iced ledges just below Mt Jackson. As it turned out, I would have been better off leaving the snowshoes in the vehicle. The surfaces were hard packed and icy in some places. Some postholes on the margins of the trail which must have been created on a warmer day. I switched to trail crampons which provided adequate traction. Most other hikers were wearing micro-spikes. There was one hiker wearing Yak-Trax which made for difficult going in the worst spots. There was extensive ice over the Jackson Branch just below the summit of Mt Jackson. The icy area near the Mt Jackson summit could be avoided by using a by-pass through the scrub to the left (on ascent) of the true trail. The ice surfaces weren't as difficult on the Webster Cliff Trail between Mt Jackson and Mt Webster. Silver Cascade was a beautiful frozen waterfall off to the side of the trail on the Webster Branch. Saw the MIT outing club at Mt Webster. |
