Date of Hike: Sunday, January 21, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Enough plowed parking for 12-15 cars at Nineteen Mile Brook lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Carter Dome crossings were easy in the AM, water had dropped and bridges were stable. Crossings on bushwhack (Cowboy Brook and Nineteen Mile) required some searching because the water had come up with the melt during the day and bridges were not as stable. Temps below 2000' never got above freezing so rising water could be an issue in coming days.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nineteen Mile to Carter Notch is packed and no blowdowns. Carter Notch up to Zeta Pass has 4-5 blowdowns, all pretty easy to navigate as step overs or duck unders, just the trunks are left. Carter Moriah over Mt Height has some post holes on the Carter Dome side, snowshoes recommended. Same for Carter Notch section that bypasses Mt Height, snowshoes highly recommended because of the potholes. Carter-Moriah from Zeta Pass up to South Carter is probably the hardest with 5 or so blowdowns just as you leave Zeta Pass and another 3-4 just before South Carter. All are manageable but lots of climbing and ducking required, no major detours. Carter-Moriah for about 0.2m north of South Carter is similar with another 3-4 blowdowns. After that it was mostly smooth sailing all the way to Middle Carter and the North Carter Trail. Snowshoes recommended. North Carter to Imp and Imp Loop (south) were similar, both require snowshoes because of the erosion under the monorail which can give way unexpectedly.

Comments
Comments: Used light traction all the way up to Carter Dome and then put on snowshoes for the remainder of the hike once I got back to the Carter Notch bypass of Mt Height because of instability of the monorail and existing potholes.

Imp north was not broken out at the intersection.

Bushwhack from Imp to Nineteen Mile was one of the easiest parts, there isn't a well defined bushwhack although I followed 2 other tracks so it might be easier to follow now.
