I took only microspikes, Louise took also Hillsound Pros (light crampons). Started out OK on crusty, icy snow but by the time we hit the steep parts, they were all ice covered and tricky to negotiate. Nobody on trail, but there was a set of tracks which we followed. We bushwhacked around some of the worst icy parts but finally we realized we needed full crampons if we were going to stay on the trail. My concern became that while we could stomp our way up the ice, there was no way I was going to be able to stomp securely going downhill with microspikes. We had gained about 1500 ft. The other tracks had turned around. So we thought, what are we doing this for? This was not the enjoyable hike we had anticipated. We are not youngsters, and any kind of a fall we would be hurtin for certain so we decided to turn around. Louise put on her Hillsounds light crampons but even at that she slipped and hurt her leg. It certainly was not impossible for someone to do this climb. but not us. |
