Trail is in good shape aside from the trees mentioned above. There are maybe 3-4 spots of hard visible ice with other areas lurking just beneath the snow. The only one I found sketchy was about 3 miles up - a steep and icy mess of maybe 30-40 feet. I was able to ascend it slowly and cautiously but coming down I opted to just whack around it. The trail was pretty solid all the way through although when I started descending around noon the top snow was becoming a little soft on the upper half of the trail - the lower half was still solid on my way out. I wore Microspikes for the entire trek and was fine though I had more aggressive traction if needed.
As predicted the temps shot straight up this morning. When I got to the summit I was greeted with slightly filtered sun, not much wind and fantastic views of the northern Presidentials. I actually had the top to myself for about 15 minutes which was nice since it was a good opportunity to linger :) I saw about a dozen others enjoying the day as well. |
