Comments
Comments: Road walk and lower trails were packed, if a little soft and choppy, and fine with spikes in the morning. Some tracks heading out along Carrigain Notch Tr but not well packed and quite soft so we opted for snowshoes at the junction. Tracks heading up to Vose Spur shortly after the big rock (in the usual place). Lower sections had soft snow that was undermined and collapsing in places but improved higher up. Talus field had rocks mostly exposed with some snow around the edges. We skirted the rocks on the left side and rejoined the tracks above the talus field. Surprisingly little snow on the summit cone.
We then headed for Carrigain - much more snow along the ridge. Found pretty good woods down to the col, and then good going up the talus field on the bump that leads to Carrigain’s Ridge. Big blowdown patch, lots of spruce traps and thick sections heading up to the ridge from there. Breakable crust with sugar snow underneath. Woods were better once we gained the upper part of the ridge and made our way up to Carrigain’s summit save for a few thick spots. Nice solid packed trail from the summit down to the bottom of the long switch back. Then soft, mushy trail and road walk. We (and a few others) opted for snowshoes, also some in spikes. Nice day out - enjoyed the bushwhack more than we expected to.
