Great day to be up high -- in the clouds but virtually no wind with temperatures in the twenties. Valley Way is hard packed with post holes to the sides of the narrow monorail. There are a handful of significant ice flows, which are manageable with care. As previously reported, the summit cone is a mix of some snow but mostly rime ice and bare rock. I wore spikes up and Kahtoola crampons down. We left our snowshoes at the car, which proved to be the right decision. Fallsway is a nice way to finish the hike -- the frozen waterfalls along Snyder Brook are quite the sight.
Most trails look traveled. Two young men doing a traverse had gone up Watson and reported little ice but lots of bare scree.
Nice meeting Bob from Concord, working on the grid. |
