I wore my brand new Kahtoola K-10s and Trudy the Hillsound Pros. We wore them the whole trail up and down. The ice was unrelenting, microspikes would not be advisable, ice was too hard for our poles to stick in. Ollie the dog could not do 3 sections so we bushwhacked around. At that last little cliff near the summit just before the trail bends right, we bushwhacked up around, turned out we were not the first and it was not bad at all, we kind of cut the corner on the trail, it's a good way to avoid that small cliff feature. We put up little "flags" so we see our bushwhacks on the descent. One curiosity, when we were starting to climb steeper about 1/2 mile from start there was a crashing in the trees up above the trail. We never heard a sound like that in years of hiking. At first we thought it was trees falling over, but the sound moved downhill, then back up again. It sounded like a dinosaur breaking through the trees, it was loud but we could see nothing, we were going to investigate but when the sound moved a good way downhill and then back up we knew we couldn't chase it. So we moved on. It was weird. Couldn't have been an avalanche there was no soft snow. |
