Comments
Comments: The Highland Center desk indicated that microspikes were sufficient. The group leaders decided to leave snowshoes behind, however, I decided to carry snowshoes just in case conditions required them. Started in spikes (sharpened Hillsounds) but found that they barely provided the traction needed on the steep ascent and descent trail sections later on. Additional energy required to hike those sections. A couple of inches of snow had fallen the previous day or night. Switched to snowshoes when reaching the Mt. Tom spur and found the going significantly easier. Moreover it was better for the trail to pack down the new snow. Some minor drifting on trail to Field.
