Comments
Comments: Even though we started out with snowshoes, we took them off, just before converging onto the Piper Trail (where we put on our microspikes). In all the years of winter hiking, this is only the second time I had ever had to report an “attempt”. It was not long after we got out of the tree line when we came onto the icy ledges. As I was slowly walking along an icy patch, a happy dog came sliding down that ledge, freaking out (with concern) both me and nurseA (since the poor thing couldn’t stop). But he recovered and got his bearings. Then I hit a spot and slide back down about 10 feet. At that point, between nurseA, who had recovered from a serous back injury, three years ago (and on her first winter hike), and me, who had issues with a rotator cuff...we decided “Not today, Chocorua”. Hahaha. But, I believe, most people who had gone up the trail, made it to the top. You just have to make sure your spikes are sharp enough. In fact, the owner of the dog had mentioned this, too. My microspikes are 10 years old - and I didn’t realize how rounded the teeth had got. I never thought of sharpening them.
