Wapack is mostly clear going, but it has a lot of 5-8 foot long icy sections that are traversable with plain boots and abundant caution. There's a section that's probably 75 feet long where the trail is entirely ice with running water going across -- impassable without some kind of traction aid. While you could bushwhack your way around this, that would entail stomping on a lot of dormant plants, mosses, and lichens. Microspikes or Yaktrax make the way going very easy so you can spare the local flora.
Marion Davis has fewer icy sections, but a LOT of mud. Hopping from dry rock to dry rock is an option in some areas, but unavailable in others. Gaiters are handy if you don't want your boots slathered with mud.
