Comments
Comments: Perfectly clear skies and great views. Presidentials were perfectly clear. The first mile + had a few inches of snow - that was very wet - with the traffic up and down it was well packed and given cold temps/warm temps and potential rain might actually become icy- On the way down this stretch was almost getting icy once sun had set. Once you hit the switchbacks and up to first view ledge - the snow went from wet to deeper powder six inches to a foot with deeper drifts - on this stretch a pair of folks were ahead of me with just traction and struggled up postholing - on ocassion more than a foot+ deep - wearing snowshoes I tried to leveled this out a bit on the way up. Met another pair on this stretch coming down also with boots and traction - trail on this stretch but trail was still choppy on my way down - on my way down tried to level it out again but I think will take a few more snowshoes to get it smooth. On this stretch there are still exposed rocks and more just under the surface that might trip you up but snowshoes are still the best way to go. A few ice patches but nothing of concern. Both pair of folks turned around at first view ledges. Above the first view ledge the trail was unbroken - patches of deep snow but ledges up to spur were largely bare. Spur path to Crawford had snow - occasionally deep with some bare rocks. Summit is pretty well bare rock with a few ice patches. Went down Davis Path beyond Mt Crawford spur about half a mile to the view ledge - trail was unbroken with snow a foot+ deep with deeper drifts but at least is now broken out a bit. Beyond this ledges looks like no recent travel.
