We couldn't have asked for better weather on Saturday and then on Sunday we experienced alternating showers, downpour and even some sleet so trail conditions changed drastically. Trail was dry at the start, and quickly changed to breakable ice so we tossed our microspikes on. We were met with a couple steep ice fields/wet rock face conditions 2.5 mi in. Not too bad going up. Beyond that we switched into snowshoes for the rest of the way until Moriah and the Imp Shelter but it was like a landmine of postholes. The trail alternated between exposed rock surfaces (which made my snowshoes cry a little) and very soft slushy snow between Moriah and the Imp with a 3ft snow base. Saw some mice friends at the shelter, bear box is buried so we tied up our food and we had to walk down a ways to access water from the brook. On our way back down we came upon probably about 10 or more ice fields which were a bit challenging to say the least but microspikes saved us. Very muddy.
PS Plethora of post holes made for prime conditions for unexpected face planting! |
