Comments
Comments: The trail breaks down roughly into thirds: bare boot, traction, and snowshoes. At the traverse around the cone near the top, the snow is deep enough, and the spruce traps numerous enough, that you'll want snowshoes. As has been mentioned in other posts, the lack of traffic is palpable in the terrain. However much a drag that may be to some, the trail is indeed quite passable if you're patient. Modulate expectations, and you'll have a good time. The greenery is starting to come in all around, so you'll be rewarded with a fine view for your effort if the sky is clear.

After the traverse, the trail abruptly becomes bare rock, and you'll have fine footing the rest of the way. I didn't venture out, but from all outward appearances, the col heading toward Monroe looked pretty good. If I'd hit the trail a couple hours earlier, I'd have made a break for it without much hesitation.
