We spend about 3 hours hiking in rain or mist before that stopped and the day got a bit nicer. The trail is mostly melted out with just a few spots of crumbling monorail and ice that was pretty easy to walk next to without leaving the trail. No traction needed, wore trail runners the whole way and never even considered microspikes. Some (avoidable) mud and lots of running water from the rain/snowmelt. Only got wet feet from a few bad steps on my part. I'd guess that by next weekend things should be pretty well melted out on most trails in the Whites except where the snow/monorail gets exceptionally deep.
Those are some classic White Mountains trails: steep and super rocky/root-filled with little possibility of running for most of the route. Props to anyone who has the mental concentration and fitness to go after a fast time on those trails! |
